A constable attached to the Chalisgaon police station in Jalgaon district was arrested for accepting Rs65 lakh as bribe from a private firm. Officials of the anti-corruption bureau (ACB) in Nashik caught Bipin Jagannath Tiwari red-handed on Tuesday afternoon.
According to ACB officers, a local farmer filed a complaint with the Chalisgaon police against Samruddha Jeevan Foods India Limited, saying the company is in the business of offering RD and FD (recurring deposit and fixed deposit) without the permission of the RBI and the zilla parishad. It sells buffaloes and goats to farmers on installments. Besides taking cash as installments, the firm also has a scheme in which it takes milk and dung in lieu of money.
“The police began investigating the case and constable Tiwari demanded Rs1 crore from a company official to settle the issue. The official approached the ACB office and lodged a complaint against Tiwari,” said an ACB officer.
“We laid a trap near Manegaon road at Y point and caught Tiwari red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs65 lakh,” said Shashikant Mahavarkar, superintendent of police (Nashik ACB). “We are investigating the case and trying to find out if other officers are involved. We will also check the phone records of Tiwari and the others.”
