Activist Pravin Wategaonkar, who filed the petition on alleged irregularities in irrigation projects in the state, has questioned the government move to appoint a special investigation team (SIT) instead of instituting a judicial probe.
In an affidavit in Bombay High Court Tuesday, Wategaonkar said the state government should clarify whether SIT had the power to conduct a criminal investigation and file a first information report.
He demanded the government state the terms of reference of SIT.
In December last year, the state government announced the SIT headed by water resources expert Madhav Chitale to probe allegations of irregularities in irrigation projects.
The affidavit states, "Media reports suggest there are multiple terms of reference based on which SIT is to undertake its work, detecting irregularities being one of them. The mammoth task envisaged by various terms of reference would be used for delaying criminal investigation in cases of irregularities and corruption."
