New Delhi: The BJP on Friday stepped up its attack on the UPA over the VVIP chopepr scam, asking it to reveal “who benefitted from kickbacks” in the deal and which was “the family” referred to in the Italian court papers.
Claiming the government was trying to cover up the case, the BJP accused the UPA of diverting attention to non-issues like changes made in specifications of helicopters. “The issue is not technical specifications but the real issues are the corruption and the kickbacks and the government’s
failure to order timely probe and find out the Indian beneficiaries,” party spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said.
“Who finalized and signed the VVIP chopper deal? Who received the kickbacks? In two places, the Italian chargesheet talks about payment of 28 million euros to ‘the family’.
The country wants to know who ‘the family’ is,” Javadekar said. While he did not elaborate, in Hyderabad, senior BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu said, “The Italian connections have to be probed. Natural doubts are arising in the minds of the people. I do not want to name any individual without having direct proof.”
The BJP demanded a timebound, court-monitored CBI probe into the alleged kickbacks in the Rs 3,600 crore AugustaWestland chopper deal.
“The CBI inquiry will not yield any result in the UPA regime without monitoring by the court,” Javadekar said, adding that in the 2G spectrum allocation case, the probe agency had conducted a “lame duck inquiry” for 15 months before the Supreme Court started monitoring it.
