Granite scam: Alagiri’s son surrenders in court

Union Minister MK Alagiri's son Durai Dayanidhi on Friday surrendered before the Melur Judicial Magistrate near Madurai for his alleged involvement in the multi-crore granite mining scam.

The move came three days after the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court granted him anticipatory bail in the case. On August 7, cases were registered against 10 people, including Durai Dayanidhi, charging companies owned by them with mining sand and granite without permission.

The scam came to light when former Madurai Collector U Sagayam held an inquiry and submitted a report to the government, stating that illegal quarrying had cost the exchequer a loss of over Rs 16,000 crore.

Durai, who has been in hiding since the scam came to light, surrendered his passport in court and provided a personal security of Rs 10,000. On Monday, Justice C T Selvam of also directed Dayanidhi to appear daily at the Melur police station in Madurai, where the case is registered against him, until further orders.

Cases have been registered against him under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 120(b) (criminal conspiracy), 447 (criminal trespass) and 420 (cheating), for allegedly quarrying illegally on government land.

The action came close on the heels of a detailed survey of 175 granite quarrying sites by the district administration on a report by former District Collector U Sagayam, estimating loss to the state exchequer by illegal quarrying at Rs 16,338 crore. Alagiri claimed that the case against his son was political motivated.
