As
many as nine companies allegedly involved in illegal mining of granite
stone in Madurai district have been banned from exporting them.
Officials sources said the ban was imposed by the Customs Department following a letter from Madurai Rural Police stating that cases were registered against these companies for illegal granite mining.
Customs officials said if the granite companies had any outstanding committed orders, they should obtain ‘No Objection’ certificates from the Revenue Department.
Cases have been filed against several granite companies in Madurai district, including one in which Union Minister M K Alagiri’s son is a partner, following a recent official report which pegged loss to the state exchequer at over Rs 16,000 crore due to illegal quarrying.
Meanwhile, Vigilance and Anti-corruption wing of the police said they seized documents of immovable assets of PRP Granites in Dindigul and Theni districts following searches.
DVAC teams were formed to assess the assets of the company, which recorded fast growth in a short period, to inspect the properties in Uthamapalayam and Royappan Patti where the company directors had relatives.

Granite scam: public can lodge complaints
Public can directly submit their petitions to the Superintendent of Police Madurai District on September 1 (Saturday) against erring granite quarry operators/companies/firms/representatives on any form of intimidation acts.
According to a press release, the police have received specific information during inspections at granite quarries in Melur, Keelaiyur, Keelavalavu and other surrounding hamlets in Madurai district that many quarry operators had allegedly indulged in acts which harmed the public. Many tanks for irrigation purposes and patta lands in villages close to granite quarries were either encroached upon or trespassed.
Instances of intimidation against private land owners have come to light now, when they refused to part with their immovable properties to granite quarry owners. Tillers were threatened to stay away from carrying out farm related works in fields. Explosives, which were used for mining purposes, harmed the people in the nearby vicinity as they were of high decibels. There have been complaints of permanent disability caused due to the illegal mining operations.
In some other cases, the farmers’ have alleged that their lands were taken away by some granite operators who used force and purchased their properties for paltry sums in the past. Whenever, there was any rejection or the land owners refused to part with, the erring granite operators encroached by stocking granite slabs, thus preventing the land owners from free access to their lands.
For detailed inquiry and action, the petitioners can approach the SP at the District Police Office on September 1, 2012 from 10 a.m. onwards, the press release added.
